"The Miracle of the Fan Belt"

Pastel on sandpaper
28 x 20 in.

My friend Roger and I were stranded in the middle of the dessert on a remote single lane road, in a '64 Corvair with a broken fan belt. Hours later we finally spotted a car coming towards us. Like a mirage shimmering in the dessert heat, the dark squat object drew closer to us. A '53 Olds pulled up and out stepped a cowboy in a silver shirt who asked us what the trouble might be."We'd really appreciate it if you could give us a ride to the next town to get a fan belt for this car," we asked."I just might have a fan belt that would fit your car," he said. He lifted up the trunk of the Olds and fished out a brand new fan belt that fit the Corvair perfectly. He even helped us put it on and we thanked him. Roger and I looked at each other like, "What the Hell just happened?" - and watched him drive off into the evening glow, probably to save some other unfortunate souls.
